The Watering Hole Vol. 3

Welcome to The Watering Hole. Where wild horses go to get refreshed, socialize and find out what’s going on with their amigos. We hope this newsletter does the same for all of you.

KCA Family:

Howdy everybody. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.  And we all certainly have a lot to be thankful for don’t we! Eli and I want to start the family section by sending our most sincere condolences to Rowland Chaney for the loss of his beloved wife Cheryl. She was a magnificent women and his true sole mate. Thankfully she is now pain free and able to not only watch over their magnificent Kigers running in the pasture but all the wild Kigers running free in the mountains of Oregon. Rowland our kindest thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Teresa and Billy Brio are home from Buck Brannaman's in Wyoming and Billy is starting his life as a ranch horse. Teresa also had a great loss last week when her brother past away after a life long battle with cancer. This newsletter comes to you a little late as I was in Los Angeles the first weekend of November riding in a horse training video for Richard Winters. Then I drove from LA to Burns, OR for the BLM Kiger Adoption.

KCA News:

The Winters clinic I went to was very interesting and a lot of fun. Especially because there were two ½ Kigers and 1 full Kiger at the Clinic. None of them ours!  I took Walley my 6 yr old Blue Roan Appapaso BLM mustang gelding and as always he was voted the ‘Wal-Mart Greeter’ or the horse with the best manners towards people and other horses. One of the Kiger participants was Natalie Henderson, a gal from Petaluma, Richard hooked me up with her to “truck-pool” to his clinic, how surprised I was when she got to my house and unloaded “Wiley” a 5 yr old ½ Kiger, ½ Paint. Boy is he cute!! Natalie is researching getting a breeding cert from the Kiger stud father so she can join the KMA in the ½ Kiger division and be a part of our family. SO for now we welcome her as a ‘second cousin’.  Eli and I also went to a one day Trail Trials clinic, put on by the CSHA. I really think this is something all of us could have a ball at and the Kigers will really excel. Let’s all join the CSHA and start attending their trail trials….. winning ribbons, buckles and Kiger accolades!

KCA Horses:

‘DOT’: KCA Colorada con Brio: is a 3 yr old line back bay mare. She is very personable, with magnificent style and action. She has that Kiger super smooth, ground eating walk all trail riders dream about. She is truly a horse ‘con Brio’. Her bloodlines include double bred Kiger Diamond Rio O106-W and Wallowa Kiger 001-W, the very first horse registered in the KMA. She will make a wonderful trail/ranch/endurance horse and an excellent brood mare.

‘RED’: KCA El Grande Rojo:  is a 3 yr old deep red, Bay Dun gelding. He is very long and tall. He is a great English or speed event prospect. Red is currently in training and his asking price is $3,500.00 until he is under saddle at which time it will increase significantly.

‘CHICA’ This little girl is my pride and joy. She is a yearling dun filly with beautiful dun factor marking. Words can’t describe her looks or what her loving personality is like. She is for sale to an approved show home only. All of these horses come with registration in the KMA.

We also have all the real cool wild Kigers we adopted last week. Of course they will not be available to purchase for a year. But feel free to get your deposit in and come watch their progress. All 4 are stud colts, all to be gelded. They include: a light dun weanling with a small white circle/star. 2 yearlings: 1 dark dun and 1 grullo. And a 2 year old Grullo colt. He is already over 15 hands!! And will be a total pet. I can already get within about 4 feet of him. I have great English/jumping plans for him! At the adoption his nick name was Giraffe as he towered over all the other horses.

KCA Training:

I currently have room for two more full time horses in training. Full Training is $700 a month. KCA horses get a discount of $600.00 per month. This includes one riding lesson per week on your horse, if your horse is broke. I have lots of trail obstacles, so let’s get those ponies ready for next years Trail Trials. I will also show your horse, coach or prep you and/or your horse at a show or participate in any kind of Kiger promotion. Anyone interested in seeing wild Kigers gentled this is the place!

KCA Events:

BLM KIGER ADOPTION:  WOW, What an experience! I am so glad I got to go!! The weather was almost perfect, accommodation OK and the education and new friends off the charts!! I could write a book about the week but here are some highlights: The BLM put a USA map with push pins for everyone to show where they came from. The long distance award went to a guy from Rhode Island, other Kiger fans came from New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alaska, Kansas, Idaho as well as AZ, CA, OR, and WA. I did some analysis based strictly on the horses as they are listed in the catalog and here is what I surmised: 116 total horses: 64 females (55%) 52 males (45%) They break down as follows:

41 - Weanlings   35%                              1 - grey             >1%

27 - Yearlings    23%                              4 – brown          3%

17 - 2 yr olds     15%                              5 – black           4%

10 – 3 yr olds     9%                               8 – bay              7%

3 – 4 yr olds      3%                               16 – grulla         14%

5 – 5yr olds       4%                               82 – dun            71%

5 – 6 yr olds      4%

5 – 7 yr olds      4%

1 – 17 yr old      >1%

Two horses were in the sick pen including the only Red Dun. A magnificent filly, by far my first choice of all the horses, but BLM pulled her from the sale and said after she heals (slight leg injury) she will be turned back out on the HMA. So the total sale was 114 horses. Approximately 14 horses were not sold due to no bids these included the older stallions and the bays and browns. They will be resold at other regular BLM satellite adoptions. Approximately 20 horses sold for the minimum bid of $125.00. The top selling horse was a 2 yr old Dun stud colt #8173. He was my first stud pick and I went to $2600.00, LOL!! He sold for $7800.00. My second stud choice was a stunning 2 yr old smoke black grullo.  I am sad to say I missed him by $50.00, he sold for $2050.00. The top mare was a 2 yr old Grulla #8185 she sold for $7400.00, #8187 went for $3900, #8263 for $3600, #8138 for $3400. The other mares averaged about $3000.00. Over all the Grulla’s sold for about twice what the Duns sold for, so I was lucky to get 2 of them.

* Kudos to Sue for doing a fantastic job of researching the horses and taking the time to go to the auction.  It was a lot of work, and the results will be more working Kigers for the public to enjoy. Eli

KMA 20th Anniversary: 2008 will be the 20th Anniversary of the KMA. Let’s start planning ways to get the word out. This is a great PR opportunity for the KMA and Kiger Horse. We need to take advantage of this important milestone. If any of you know of events Kigers should display/promote at lets get a list together and present it to the KMA. The KMA promotion budget is very slim so we make have to all pitch in and do some of these events ourselves. Let’s get creative!

SHA Fuzzy Furry Shows: Western 3/9/08, English 3/30/08  I know how hard it is to keep focused on riding and training during the winter so lets all use these dates as goals for our horses. The shows are a blast and only $4.00 per class. When you are not sure what to do with your green horse especially in the arena when the trails are to wet, look at the class list and start practicing. Halter classes are fun and great experience for young horses and it helps them learn to stop square and stand quietly. There are plenty of walk-trot classes for green horses and/or older riders, so we all fit in!! Stay focused on keeping your horse in the center of the alley created by your reins and legs. You should always travel forward with impulsion on a soft feel. And never, NEVER pull on both snaffle reins at the same time.
