The Watering Hole Vol. 4

Welcome to The Watering Hole. Where wild horses go to get refreshed, socialize and find out what’s going on with their amigos. We hope this newsletter does the same for all of you.

KCA Family:

We would like to welcome Amber Mecum with Cisco and Lois Crosson with Gatiada as the newest compardares in our Kiger World!  Congratulations, and Welcome!

KCA News and Events:

Well, the past few months have been busy here at KCA, lots of events and lots of horses in training.  November of 2007 was the only every 4 year  BLM auction of the wild Kigers, so KCA is the proud parents of four branded wild Kiger.  All of them are gentling down nicely and adjusting to life with humans. After they are gelded they will be available to go to new homes.

April found Sue and Roland Cheney participating in the Equine Experience in Paso Robles, Ca.  They took Wallowa’s Rio Smoke, El Steen’s Senorita Bonita and Cougar’s Hijo Warrior for the representative Kigers.  The demonstration was a resounding success, with much interest generated among the coastal horsemen.

May found Eli and Maverick, Pam Perdue and Shadow, and Teresa Trull with Billy Brio all attending a Buck Brannaman clinic in Chico.  Maverick and Billy Brio are three year old KCA geldings and Shadow is a five year old KCA mare.  Jools Topp flew in all the way from New Zealand to participate in the clinic.  She is the most accomplished barefoot farrier and one of the finest horsewomen in New Zealand. She rode Billy Brio through the colt starting class.  All these Kigers are various shades of grulla, and the interest among the accomplished horsemen and general public was astounding.  The horses all performed flawlessly, a true testament to their versatility and the Californios training technique utilized at KCA.  Even Buck asked “are those all Kigers?”.

We showed up in force at the 2008 Western States Horse Expo in June.  As we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the KMA, the Association booth and Breed barn display was very busy, with people showing a tremendous interest in our Kigers.  The riding demonstrations were well attended as well.  The word is certainly getting out about Kigers! If you missed it be sure to contact us for more information.

Sue, in conjunction with Cheney’s Classic Kigers, entered a yearling filly in the select horse sale at the Expo to celebrate the KMA 20th Anniversary.  This filly was untouched six weeks ago.  Susan did an outstanding job training and fitting her, she definitely stood out from the crowd.  Her name is  Warriors Gatiada Canta, a 100% foundation, honey dun filly by Cougars Hijo Warrior. This was the first time a Kiger had ever been in a sale of this type. Needless to say, we were all anxious to see what would happen.  After the bidding was over, she sold for $4,500.00, one of the top horses of the sale!  And she will have a magnificent home, as her new owner Lois Crosson is just a doll.

KCA Training:

Sue is not taking in any new horses until the end of August. She will have room for 4 horses at that time. Full Training is $700 a month. KCA or Kiger horses get a $50.00 per month discount. Training includes one riding lesson per week. She does have a few openings for lessons or clinics before then. She will also show your Kiger, coach or prep you and/or your horse at a show or participate in any kind of Kiger promotion. Anyone interested in seeing wild Kigers gentled, KCA is the place!

Sue volunteered to be the Horsemanship instructor again this year at the 2 day Sac. Co. SAR Sensory Clinic for Horse and Rider in May.  She put 16 hours in the saddle, while it was over 100 degrees, but it is a nice fund raiser for a good cause. And Sue gets great pleasure seeing the improvements the dedicated participants make with their horses. Welcome participants to our newsletter!

KCA Horsemanship by the Numbers Clinic in Brentwood: Sue just got back from 2 days in Brentwood with a great group of horse people who she meet when they attended the Sensory Clinic and they wanted her to do a clinic just for them. Another heat wave descended upon them, but the stable owners had a pool and water slide! A huge thank you to Gina and Ally for putting that together!! And to Kim for the use of her facility. Many more are be planned for that area. Welcome to our newsletter.

Clinics: Dates are available in September, Oct and Nov for one and 2 day clinics. Tentative plans for a 2 day clinic/playday/camp-out at the KCA facility in Sheridan for mid October are in the works. And a 1 day Ranch Skills Clinic in Brentwood Memorial Day. If interested please email Sue to be put on the info. list.
